GEORGE NEUMANN, residing on section 22, in Herman Township, was born in Zechow, province of Brandenburg, Germany, November 17, 1826.  He was reared to farm life, receiving a common-school education in the German Lutheran schools of his native land.  Upon attaining to man's estate, Mr. Neumann was united in marriage with Charlotte Henning, a daughter of Michael and Marie (Eichman) Henning, born in the same village as her husband, June 21, 1849.  Mrs. Neumann is the second in order of birth in a family of seven children, comprising five sons and two daughters, Michael, deceased, came to the United States in 1854, and settled on section 34, Herman Township; Mrs. Neumann is the next younger; Marie and Fred still abide in the Fatherland; Carl is a farmer in the town of Herman; John is a baker by trade and resides in Michigan; and William remains in his native country, where he has seen much service in the army, having taken an active part in the Revolution between France and Germany and Austria.  The mother of this family died in 1882, and the father in 1871, having preceded his wife some eleven years.  Both died and were buried in the village where their lives had been spent.

    The mother of our subject departed this life in 1847, and his father in 1856, having reached the age of sixty-four years.  George Neumann is the fifth in order of birth in a family of seven children.  On the 7th of April, 1866, accompanied by his family, Mr. Neumann sailed from Bremen for New York, reaching the latter point two weeks later.  From New York they came direct to the town of Herman, where, on the 9th of May, 1866, the father purchased a farm of eighty acres, on which he now lives, paying $2,100 for the same.  A few years later, an additional purchase of twenty acres was made, at a cost of $1,000.  This farm Mr. Neumann has found a very satisfactory investment; it is under a high state of cultivation, and yields a rich return for the labor bestowed upon it.

    Mr. and Mrs. Neumann have a family of six children, three sons and three daughters.  Minnie became the wife of Christian Boetke, a farmer of the town of Rhine, Sheboygan County.  Fred is a carpenter in the Chair City.  Augusta married Gottlieb Wildgrube, a farmer of Nicollet County, Minn.  Carl, who now owns the home farm, is a native of the same village as his father, and was married February 12, 1885, to miss Anna Kuhfusz, a daughter of Adolph and Johanna (Boeger) Kuhfusz.  The bride was born May 26, 1864.  To the young couple have been born two children, Amelia and Hilda.  Christian, the next younger child of Mr. Neumann, is a farmer of Herman Township; and Marie, the youngest daughter, married Rudolph Usade.

    All the members of the family belong to the Lutheran Church.  Mr. Neumann, as well as all of his sons, is a stanch Democrat.  By industry and economy, our subject has accumulated a competence, and by an honorable, upright life has won the high regard of the people of the community in which he has lived for so many years.
